[untitled] - Tagging System

[untitled] - Tagging System

SUMMARY

SUMMARY

With this case study, I wanted to challenge myself to

create a plausible feature for [untitled] users. I found

an opportunity where I could create a tagging system

where users can keep track of the state of their records.

Problem

Problem

Artists and producers often juggle dozens of ideas and projects. They try to mentally track current statuses of records. It’s hard to stay organized, and notes get lost in the noise.

The current Nintendo Switch home screen is functional, but many users find it soulless. It lacks the charm and emotional delight found in past Nintendo consoles like the DS or Wii.

How might we reduce friction in the music creation process?

What if we enabled musicians to easily tag the status of

their records?

Solution

Solution

Design a system within [untitled] that helps users visually and functionally track the state of records without

disrupting their flow.

A redesigned home screen that blends modern UI principles with nostalgic elements: playful

microinteractions, customizable backgrounds, and improved game navigation, bringing back

the magic.

Research & Insights

Research & Insights

Before I landed on my idea, I explored Reddit forums and Twitter (now X) to identify commonly requested features from [untitled] users. As a musician myself, I also decided to reflect on my own experiences with music creation to identify pain points and discover opportunities for improvement within [untitled].

Final Designs

Final Designs

Before I started designing, I first took note of [untitled]’s design patterns. [untitled] leans toward a minimal, clean, and tactile aesthetic with fluid animations. These design patterns guided my approach to integrating the tagging system, ensuring this new system aligned with the existing experience.

PART 01

Tag Design

The tag shapes are modelled after [untitled]’s existing pill components to maintain visual consistency. These tags are designed to be quickly scannable and color coded based on the stage of the record, providing clarity at a glance.

PART 02

What’s the Current Status prompt

Once a user swipes a song, a bar prompting, “What’s the current status?”, invites the user to select one of four key stages in the music lifecycle.

Once a user swipes a song, a bar prompting, “What’s the current status?”, invites the user to select one of four key stages in the music lifecycle.

Users have four options: recording, production, finalizing, completed

In this version, the background adapts to the dominant color of the selected game and features animated shapes.

Note:

These stages were identified through research as the most relevant stages in a musician’s workflow.

PART 03

Final Tag Design in action

Tags are displayed beneath each song in their respective colors, quickly informing the user of the record's current status.

Learnings

Learnings

As a musician myself, I understand how messy the process can be. Even having a small feature that aims to reduce friction can still make a big difference. This project reinforced my belief on the value of designing tools that support and ease the creative process.

What's Next?

What's Next?

I believe this feature can be a strong tool in an artist's creative process. I'm excited to continue developing this idea while learning more about tactile, clean design. By extending [untitled]'s existing design patterns, I aim to further enhance the design and improve the overall user experience.
